Lake Vestmannsvatn

 

Location:

Vestmannsvatn is located in Sudur-Þingeyjarsyslu in North-Eastern Iceland.
 

Practical information:

The lake is 2.4 km2  Reykjadalsa river runs to the lake and Eyvindará river runs from the lake.  The maximum deep is about 10m with an average depth of 2 metre. 
 

Distance from Reykjavik and the nearest township.

Distance from Reykjavik is about 455 km and 24 km south of Husavik. The lake is by the road no. 845
 

Fishing area:

You can fish the whole lake, but no closer to the rivers than 100m.    
 

Accommodation: 

There are many option in the area.  Camping and restaurant can be found at Dalakofinn, Laugum that is few km away from the lake ( more info at www.dalakofinn.is) 
 

Fishing potential: 

Both brown trout and char can be caught in the lake among with occasional salmon.
 

Daily opening hours: 

Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk.
 

Fishing season:

Fishing season starts 15th of May and ends 30th of September.
 

Bait: 

Fly, lure and worm is allowed.
 

Best time of the year:

Best season is early summer and late summer, thought is is rather even.  Fishing is best in the morning and evening but it is also very good in the mid-day.
 

Rules:

Please register before attending to fishing at Dalakofinn (Laugum) and show the Fishing card and some ID.  Littering and off-road driving is forbidden.  Children under 14 are allowed for free, if accompanied by adult cardholder.  Dogs are not allowed to run free in the area since it is rich of birdlife.

Æðarvatn

Aedarvatn on Melrakkaslétta

 

Location:

Hraunhafnarvatn, Æðarvatn and Arnarvatn are located in Presthólahreppur in Melrakkaslétta, at the N-Eastern corner of Iceland. 
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township

The distance from Reykjavik is 610 km, via Holaheidi, and 10 km from Hraunhafnarvatn to Raufarhöfn, a village situated in the North-East of Iceland.
 

Practical information 

Hraunhafnarvatn is the largest lake in Melrakkaslétta, and covers about 3, 4 km2.  It rises to 2 m above sea level; with the deepest point at approx. 4 m. Æðarvatn and Arnarvatn are much smaller.
 

Fishing area:

Fishing is only allowed in the property of Skinnalón (marked on the map).
 

Accommodation:  

Camping is permitted in the designated area, without proper facilities however. The campsite at Raufarhöfn is quite lovely and Hotel Norðurljós can offer various possibilities as well as Nest Gusthouse www.nesthouse.is at Raufarhöfn.
 

Fishing potential 

One can expect char and brown trout in both Hraunhafnarvatn and Æðarvatn, usually quite large. Brown trout is more common in Arnarvatn.

Bait:

All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure.

Ölvesvatn – The Selá Lakes

Ölvesvatn – The Selá Lakes  (Vatnasvæði Selár)

Location: 

Ölvesvatn (the largest of the Selá lakes) is located on Skagaheiði, Skefilsstaðahreppur in Skagafjörður (Northern Iceland).
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township:

The distance from Reykjavík is approx. 366 km and 40 km from Sauðárkrókur. The lake lies about 6 km from the Hvalnes junction, but is unfortunately only suitable for larger vehicles. The road can be rocky, but small jeeps are good, but very difficult for small cars.
 

Practical information:

Ölvesvatn (Lake Ölves) is the largest of the Selá lakes, but fishing is also permitted in Fossvatn, Selvatn, Grunnatjörn, Andavatn and Stífluvatn, in addition to the connecting brooks and rivers. Ölvesvatn covers about 2,8km2 and is thought to be fairly deep.    
 

Fishing area:

No restrictions. You can fish all the lakes mentioned and the creeks between the lakes.
 

Accommodation:

A nice fishing cabin is available at the site, with all necessary equipment. Booking should be place at Hvalnes, tel. (+354) 453-6520 or 821-6520 or by email, hvalnes730@simnet.is, prior to arrival. You can also camp there but you need to buy camping fee at the farm.
 

Fishing potential:

One can expect medium or large brown trout or char. Smaller fish appears to be dwindling.

All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure. Fly fishing is, however, the most affective option.

There is a limited access to the area so please book in advance.  Bookings for the house as well are above others.  Cardholders must register at Hvalsnes, and show both Veiðikortið and an appropriate ID. There they will receive a report form to fill out and return after fishing as well as key to access the area. Littering is strictly forbidden as well as off-road driving. Children are allowed, free of charge, accompanied with adult cardholders. All adults entering the area must have license.

Svínavatn í Húnavatnssýslu

Svínavatn

 

Location:

Svínavatn is located in Húnavatnshreppur, A- Húnavatnssýsla, near the town of Blönduós.
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township

The lake lies approx. 240 km from Reykjavik, taking Highway 1 through the Hvalfjarðargöng (Hvalfjordur Tunnel). It lies approx. 9 km, from the highway, disembarking at the Highway 724 junction.
 

Information about the lake

Svínavatn rises to 130 m. above sea level, covering just about 12 km2.  The deepest point is 30 m.
 

Fishing area

The fishing area varies during the season. It is compulsory to check in at Hotel Hunavellir, where one can acquire necessary information and maps that point out where fishing is allowed at that period of time.
 

Accommodation 

Hotel Hunavellir provides bed and breakfast service, as well as campsites and cheap bunks (sleeping bag facilities). Hotel Hunavellir provides excellent facilities, including a swimming pool and hot tub.
 

Fishing potential

Brown trout is the most common catch, yet char can be expected as well.

Location 

Sléttuhlíðarvatn is located by Highway 76, north of Hofsós and about 30 minutes drive from Siglufjörður.
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township

Distance from Reykjavík is 360 km, 21 km from Hofsós and 50 km from Sauðárkrókur.
 

Practical information

The lake covers an area of 0, 76 km2 and rises to 14 m above sea level.
 

Fishing area

Fishing is only allowed on the property of the Hraun farm, marked with signs.
 

Accommodation

Organized camping area will be ready summer 2021 where cardholders can buy access to. There is also possible to rent að fishing cabin. Please contact landlord.
 

Fishing potential 

Sea char and brown trout are both found in abundance.
 

Daily opening hours

Fishing is allowed from 08:00 am – 08:00 pm
 

Season

May 1st to September 20th.
 

Bait 

All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure.
 

Best time of the year 

The peak season is in May and June. Fishing is actually very good all summer.
 

Rules:

Kringluvatn

Kringluvatn

(Kringla Lake)

 

Location:

Kringluvatn is located in Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla, in North-Eastern Iceland.
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township

Distance from Reykjavík is 440 km and 40 km from Húsavík.
 

Practical information

The lake is 0,6km2 and rises 270m above sea level. Geitafellsá River runs from the lake into Lake Langavatn. The area is ideal for family holidays or shorts a picnic.
Ice Fishing is possible during the winter.
One should notice the mud, that most often is quite annoying during the spring time, and avoid driving through muddy places.
 

Fishing area

No restrictions.
 

Accommodation

Camping is free of charge, without proper facilities however. It is also possible to book a room at the Heiðarbær holiday farm that is located 10-15 km north the lake.
 

Fishing potential: 

Both brown and char can be caught in the lake. Large brown trout is mainly caught by ice fishing during the winter.

Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk

Fishing is permitted all year.
 

Bait:

All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure.
 

Best time of the year and day 

Late afternoon and early evening is the best chance to catch a fish. There is an equal distribution for the whole season.
 

Rules 

Littering and off-road driving is strictly forbidden. Cardholders must sign up at Heiðarbær farm and show both the Veiðikortið and an appropriate ID. Children under 14 are allowed for free, if accompanied by adult cardholder. 
Only 30 persons are allowed to fish in the lake at the same time. Therefore it is better to plan ahead and book a place well in advance.
No dogs are allowed by the lake due to the surrounding wildlife.

Ljósavatn

Location:

Ljósavatn is at Ljósavatnsskarð, Suður-Þingeyjarsýslu, to the east of Akureyri, the capital of Northern Iceland.  
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township:

You drive eastward through Akureyri, in the direction of Húsavík.  The lake is situated approx. 25 km. from Akureyri and 415 km from Reykjavík, through the Vaðlaheiðargöng (Tunnel). 
 

Practical information:

Ljósavatn rises to 105 m. above sea level, covering just about 3.2 km2.  The deepest point is 35 m., with an average deep of 10 m.  
Ljósavatn has become increasingly popular, particularly among families, who like to combine camping and fishing. Highway 1 runs directly to the lake, and thus provides an easy access.
Ljósavatn has various tributaries, including Geitá and Litlutjarnarlæk. Djúpá is its main outflow.
 

Fishing area:

See map for restricted area in the land of Vatnsendi. 
 

Accommodation:

Organised campsites are located near the lake. 
Permits can be bought at Sigríðarstaðir and Fosshóll.

Char and brown trout..
