Hitarvatn
(The Hitar Lake)
Location:
Hítarvatn is located at Mýri in Borgarbyggð, near Borgarnes, on Iceland's West coast.
Distance from Reykjavík:
Distance from Reykjavík is 120 km, through Hvalfjarðargöng (Hvalfjörður tunnel) and the town of Borgarnes. It is possible to drive all the way to the lake.
Practical information:
The lake is 7,6km2 and is located 147m above sea level. The Hítará River, renowned for salmon fishing, originates in the lake. The area is ideal for family gatherings. The Hitarvatn region is well known for its spectacular landscape. At Hítarvatn is a lot of knat during the summertime.
Fishing area:
There are no restrictions.
Accommodation:
Camping is free of charge. Toilets are located in a lodge nearby.
Fishing potential:
Hitarvatn constantly supplies very good brown trout and char fishing. People have, on a regular basis, caught more than 100 fishes in just a couple of days. The best supply of fish is where creeks enter the lake.
Daily opening hours:
Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk.
Season:
Fishing is allowed from May 29th to August 31st.
Bait:
All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure.
Best time of the year:
In the beginning of summer the best part for fishing is the west side of the lake, under the hillside called. Later in the summer it is good to fish around creeks and by the lava.
Rules:
Littering is forbidden. Cardholders must sign up at Hítardalur farm and show both the Veiðikortið and an appropriate ID. Children under 14 are allowed for me, if accompanied by adult cardholder. Only 40 persons are allowed to fish in the lake at the same time. Therefore it is better to plan in advance and book a place well in advance. Fishemen are not allowed to use boats on the lake.
