(The Hitar Lake)

 

Location:

Hítarvatn is located at Mýri in Borgarbyggð, near Borgarnes, on Iceland's West coast.
 

Distance from Reykjavík:

Distance from Reykjavík is 120 km, through Hvalfjarðargöng (Hvalfjörður tunnel) and the town of Borgarnes. It is possible to drive all the way to the lake.
 

Practical information:

The lake is 7,6km2 and is located 147m above sea level. The Hítará River, renowned for salmon fishing, originates in the lake. The area is ideal for family gatherings. The Hitarvatn region is well known for its spectacular landscape. At Hítarvatn is a lot of knat during the summertime.
 

Fishing area:

There are no restrictions.
 

Accommodation:

Camping is free of charge. Toilets are located in a lodge nearby.
 

Fishing potential:

Hitarvatn constantly supplies very good brown trout and char fishing. People have, on a regular basis, caught more than 100 fishes in just a couple of days. The best supply of fish is where creeks enter the lake.
 

Daily opening hours:

Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk.
 

Season:

Fishing is allowed from May 29th  to August 31st.
 

Bait:

All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure.
 

Best time of the year:

In the beginning of summer the best part for fishing is the west side of the lake, under the hillside called. Later in the summer it is good to fish around creeks and by the lava.
 

Rules:

Littering is forbidden. Cardholders must sign up at Hítardalur farm and show both the Veiðikortið and an appropriate ID. Children under 14 are allowed for me, if accompanied by adult cardholder. Only 40 persons are allowed to fish in the lake at the same time. Therefore it is better to plan in advance and book a place well in advance. Fishemen are not allowed to use boats on the lake.

Hraunsfjarðarvatn

Hraunsfjarðarvatn

(Hraunfjörður Lake)

 

Location: 

Hraunsfjarðarvatn is located at the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the western part of Iceland.
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township:

Distance from Reykjavik is approx. 200 km. and about 15 km from Grundarfjorður and Stykkishólmur to the north. Snæfellsnes´ new highway makes it possible to drive to the neighboring Baulárvallavatn. From that point it takes about 15 minutes’ walk to Hraunsfjarðarvatn, or just a moment by a 4-wd vehicle.
 

Practical information:

The lake covers an area of 2, 5 km2   and goes down to 84 meters at the deepest point.  The lake lies at 207 m above sea level. From the lake the Vatnaá River runs to Baulárvallavatn.
 

Fishing area

No restrictions:
 

Accomodation

Camping is free of charge; however there are no toilets or any other hygiene facilities.
 

Fishing potential:

There is an excellent prospect for brown trout fishing. The average size of an individual catch is about 2-3 pounds. In the twilight zone we have experienced larger catch, all up to 5-6 pounds.

Bait

All bait is allowed: fly, worm and lure.
The fish can lay very deep in the water so it is better to let the bait sink very deep. Lure and worm normally work very well. In the twilight zone however, the brown trout goes to the shallow waters, where fly fishing should be recommended.
 

Best time of the year

The catch is consistent all season. The twilight zone is the best time of the day.

Haukadalsvatn

Haukadalsvatn

(The Haukadalur lake)
 

Location:

Lake Haukadalsvatn is located in Haukadalur, near Búðardalur, on the west coast of Iceland.
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township

Distance from Reykjavík is approx. 140 km, taking highway 587 through Brattabrekka. Búðardalur is in the vicinity.
 

Practical information

The lake covers an area of 3,2 km2 and has the max. depth of 40 m.
 

Fishing area:

Fishing is only allowed on the designated area, belonging to the Vatn farm. The contact gives all further information.
 

Accommodation

Camping is permitted and free of charge wherever possible. Please contact the landlord for further information.
 

Fishing potential

Sea trout from the Haukadalsá river can almost exclusively be expected, but occasional salmon might be caught as well. Best chance of catching is where small creeks enter the lake.

Peak season is from mid July to end of September.

Baularvallavatn

(Lake Baularvellir)

 

Location 

Baulárvallavatn is located at the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the western part of Iceland.
 

Distance from Reykjavík and the nearest township

Distance from Reykjavik is approx. 200 km. and about 15 km from Grundarfjorður and Stykkishólmur to the north. Snæfellsnes´ new highway makes it possible to drive directly to the lake.
 

Practical information 

Baulárvallavatn covers about 1, 6 km2 and has the maximum deep of 47 metres. It rises 193 metres above sea level. The lake receives water from the Vatnaá river, and dispatches it to the Baulá river. The latter merges with the Straumfjarðará river, which is renowned for salmon fishing.
 

Fishing area

Fishing is only allowed between the northern bank of the river Vatnaá and the river Straumfjarðará.
